Halloween di Irlandia
Ucapan Lokal: Oiche Shamhna shona duit
Ireland is the birthplace of Halloween, which evolved from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the darker half of the year. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the living and the dead dissolved, allowing spirits to walk among the living. Many Halloween traditions practiced worldwide today have their origins in Irish folklore.
Traditional Irish Halloween foods include barnbrack, a fruitcake containing hidden charms that predict the future. Finding a ring means marriage within the year, a coin promises wealth, and a thimble suggests remaining single. Colcannon, a dish of mashed potatoes with cabbage and butter, sometimes also contains hidden tokens. Apple bobbing and snap apple, where players try to bite an apple suspended from a string, remain popular party games.
The city of Derry hosts what is widely considered the best Halloween celebration in the world, with the Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival attracting tens of thousands of visitors. The multi-day festival features street parades, fireworks, haunted houses, and ghostly theatrical performances throughout the city's historic walls. Dublin's Bram Stoker Festival, named after the Irish author of Dracula, combines Halloween with literary and cultural events.
In rural Ireland, older traditions persist. Bonfires are lit on hilltops, echoing the ancient Samhain fires that guided spirits and protected communities. Costumes and disguises were originally worn to confuse malevolent spirits. The tradition of going door-to-door for treats predates the American trick-or-treat by centuries, with Irish children historically collecting food and kindling for the Samhain bonfire.
