Holi in Nepal, known as Fagu Purnima, is one of the most anticipated festivals in the country and is celebrated a day earlier in the Terai region than in the hills, reflecting the cultural diversity of this small nation. The festival marks the arrival of spring and is a national public holiday celebrated with unbridled enthusiasm.

In Kathmandu and the hill regions, celebrations begin with the erection of the Chir, a ceremonial bamboo pole decorated with strips of cloth, in Basantapur Durbar Square. On the eve of Holi, the pole is burned in a ceremony recalling the destruction of the demoness Holika. The following day, the streets erupt in a riot of color as people of all ages chase each other with gulal, water balloons, and buckets of colored water.

Nepali Holi is notable for its democratic spirit. Social hierarchies dissolve, and everyone is fair game for a dousing of color. The tradition in the Terai, influenced by proximity to India, features more elaborate celebrations with bonfires, folk music, and traditional dances. In Chitwan, the Tharu community celebrates with traditional stick dances.

Traditional Holi foods in Nepal include sel roti, the ring-shaped rice bread that appears at most Nepali festivals, along with anarsa, yomari, and various mithai. Bhang-infused thandai is consumed in some communities. The celebration lasts officially for one day but in practice continues for several days, with friends and neighbors visiting each other to play Holi.

Hindu spring festival celebrated on the full moon of Phalguna month by throwing colored powders and water, symbolizing the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, and the story of Prahlada and Holika.
