Labour Day in India, known as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas or May Day, is observed on May 1 as a public holiday in many states. The first May Day celebration in India was organized in 1923 in Chennai by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan, led by Singaravelar Chettiar. The holiday recognizes the contributions of workers and advocates for labor rights in one of the world's largest workforces.

Different Indian states have their own traditions and names for the holiday. In Maharashtra, May 1 is also celebrated as Maharashtra Day, marking the formation of the state in 1960, adding a regional dimension to the celebrations. In Tamil Nadu, the day is known as Uzhaipaalar Dhinam. In Gujarat, it coincides with Gujarat Day. This overlap with state foundation days creates unique regional celebrations that combine labor and civic identity.

Trade unions affiliated with various political parties organize rallies, marches, and public meetings across the country. The demonstrations highlight distinctly Indian labor issues, including the rights of unorganized sector workers, who make up the vast majority of India's workforce, as well as minimum wage enforcement, workplace safety, and the growing gig economy. Red flags and banners are prominent at these events.

For Indian workers who receive the day off, May 1 provides respite during one of the hottest times of the year. Many families spend the day at home or visit relatives. In coastal cities, beach outings provide relief from the heat. The holiday serves as an important reminder of the labor rights challenges facing India's diverse workforce, from factory workers and farmers to domestic helpers and technology workers.
