New Year's Day(Tahun Baru Masehi) di Spanyol

Ucapan Lokal: Feliz Ano Nuevo!

Ano Nuevo in Spain arrives after one of the country's most iconic rituals: eating twelve grapes at midnight, one with each bell strike of the Puerta del Sol clock in Madrid. This tradition, called las doce uvas de la suerte, dates back to 1909 when Alicante grape growers promoted it to sell surplus stock. Today it is followed by virtually every Spaniard, often while watching the countdown on television.

January 1st itself is a quiet recovery day. Spaniards typically sleep late after cotillon parties (New Year's Eve galas at restaurants and hotels) and gather for a midday family meal. Churros con chocolate is a classic breakfast-brunch choice, along with leftover turron and polvorones from the Christmas season.

In many cities, January 1st marks the start of the rebajas (winter sales), and shopping centres open their doors to eager bargain hunters. Some coastal communities, especially in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, host polar bear swims known as banyades de Cap d'Any.

The day also serves as a bridge to the Reyes Magos (Three Kings) celebrations on January 6th, which in Spain is the primary gift-giving occasion. Families begin preparing for the Cabalgata de Reyes parades, and shops display roscones de Reyes alongside their New Year's decorations.
