The traditional Silvester meal centres on raclette or fondue, both communal dishes perfect for a social evening. Berliners (jam-filled doughnuts) are essential, with pranksters occasionally filling one with mustard instead of jam. Sekt (German sparkling wine) flows freely at midnight.

Bleigiessen (lead pouring), now done with wax, involves melting a small piece of wax on a spoon, pouring it into cold water, and interpreting the shape to divine fortunes for the coming year. A heart shape means love, a ship means travel, and a pig means abundant food.
