Pentecost(Hari Pentakosta) di Prancis
Ucapan Lokal: Joyeuse Pentecote
Pentecost in France, known as la Pentecote, has had a complex recent history as a public holiday. Whit Monday was briefly removed as a public holiday in 2005 to fund elderly care (the Journee de solidarite following the 2003 heatwave), but most companies and schools still observe it as a day off, creating a de facto three-day weekend.
Religious observances include special Masses and the tradition of decorating churches with roses and red vestments, symbolizing the tongues of fire that descended on the apostles. In some regions, trumpets are blown during the reading of the Acts of the Apostles to represent the mighty wind of the Holy Spirit.
The most spectacular French Pentecost tradition is the Pelerinage des Gitans, the Roma pilgrimage to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue. Thousands of Roma from across Europe converge on this small Provencal town to venerate their patron Saint Sarah, carrying her statue into the Mediterranean Sea in a deeply moving ceremony accompanied by Romani music and dance.
For many French families, the Pentecost weekend is a time for outdoor leisure. It falls in late May or early June, when the weather is typically excellent, and families flock to the countryside, coast, and mountains. Long lunches in the garden, visits to chateaux and vineyards, and the first beach outings of the season are common ways to spend the extended weekend.
