七夕节 (Qīxī Jié)(Festival Qixi) di Taiwan

Ucapan Lokal: Qixi kuaile

Taiwan celebrates the Qixi Festival on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month with a blend of traditional customs and modern romance. The island has preserved some traditional elements of the festival more actively than the mainland, including the worship of the Weaver Maiden at local temples, particularly at the Taipei Xia Hai City God Temple, which is famous for its matchmaking deity.

The Taipei Xia Hai City God Temple sees its busiest period around Qixi, as singles flock to pray to Yue Lao, the god of love and marriage, for help finding a romantic partner. The temple distributes red thread charms, which are believed to connect destined lovers. The ritual of seeking divine assistance in matters of the heart remains remarkably popular among young Taiwanese, combining sincere belief with a sense of fun and tradition.

Modern Taiwanese Qixi celebrations mirror Valentine's Day traditions with gift exchanges, romantic dinners, and couple activities. Night markets take on a romantic atmosphere, with couples sharing iconic Taiwanese street foods. Department stores and shopping malls run Qixi promotions, and the flower and gift industries see significant sales spikes. The holiday coexists with the Western February 14 Valentine's Day, giving Taiwanese couples two annual occasions for romantic celebration.

Traditional customs that persist in Taiwan include the offering of cosmetics, flowers, and fruit to the Weaver Maiden, performed mainly by women praying for skill and beauty. Some families maintain the custom of setting out offerings of fruit and traditional pastries under the stars on Qixi evening. The festival provides a meaningful connection to Chinese cultural heritage while embracing contemporary expressions of romance in Taiwanese society.
