All Saints' Day(諸聖人の日) の フィリピン

現地の挨拶: Maligayang Undas

All Saints' Day on November 1st and All Souls' Day on November 2nd, collectively known as Undas in the Philippines, form one of the most important family occasions in this deeply Catholic country. The tradition of visiting the graves of departed family members is so widespread that it triggers a mass migration second only to Christmas.

Filipino families travel from Manila and other cities to their home provinces to visit cemeteries. The graves are cleaned, repainted, and decorated with flowers and candles in the days before November 1st. On the day itself, families effectively camp at the cemetery, bringing food, drinks, card games, and even portable speakers for music. The atmosphere is a remarkable blend of the solemn and the festive, reflecting the Filipino approach to death as a continuation of family bonds.

The cemetery becomes a social gathering point. Families set up tables and chairs beside their loved ones' graves, share meals of lechon, pancit, lumpia, and rice, and catch up with relatives they may not have seen since the previous year's Undas. Vendors sell candles, flowers, food, and drinks at the cemetery gates.

Traffic congestion during Undas is legendary. The government designates November 1st and 2nd as special non-working holidays, and EDSA and other major highways are gridlocked with Manila residents heading to provincial cemeteries. Despite the logistical challenges, the tradition endures as one of the most deeply felt expressions of Filipino family values and Catholic faith.
