Ascension Day in Germany, known as Christi Himmelfahrt, falls forty days after Easter and is a nationwide public holiday. While the religious significance commemorates Christ's ascent to heaven, the day has taken on a dual identity as Vatertag, Father's Day, creating one of Germany's most distinctive and boisterous secular celebrations.

The Vatertag tradition, particularly strong in eastern and northern Germany, sees groups of men loading wooden handcarts, called Bollerwagen, with beer, wine, and food, and setting off on long hikes or bicycle tours through the countryside. The atmosphere is festive and uninhibited, and the day has a reputation as one of the heaviest drinking days of the German year. Police report significantly more alcohol-related incidents on Christi Himmelfahrt than on any other holiday.

The religious observance involves special church services, and in Catholic regions, processions through fields and meadows (Flurprozessionen) are held to bless the crops and pray for a good harvest. In some Bavarian communities, the procession includes elaborately decorated floats and costumed participants.

The Thursday holiday creates a popular Bruckentag opportunity: by taking Friday off, Germans can enjoy a four-day weekend. Families use the extended break for short trips, garden parties, and the first serious barbecues of the season. Asparagus, which is in peak season in late May, features prominently on Ascension Day menus.
