Ascension Day in the Netherlands, known as Hemelvaartsdag, is a national public holiday that falls on a Thursday, creating one of the most popular long weekends of the Dutch year. Many Dutch workers take the Friday as a bridging day (brugdag), resulting in a four-day weekend that is enthusiastically used for outdoor activities and short vacations.

Religious observance includes special services in Dutch churches, but for the majority of the population, the day is primarily a secular holiday. The Thursday timing means that many Dutch companies and schools close for the entire Friday as well, creating a de facto four-day weekend.

Hemelvaartsdag traditions include outdoor markets, village festivals, and the beloved Dutch practice of terras-sitting, enjoying drinks and food on outdoor cafe terraces. The late May timing means the Netherlands is in full spring bloom, with gardens bursting with color. Cycling is the quintessential Dutch Ascension Day activity, with families and friends setting out on fietstochten (cycling tours) through the polders, along canals, and through the countryside.

The holiday coincides with the season for fresh herring (Hollandse Nieuwe), asparagus, and strawberries. Barbecues are popular, and the first outdoor swimming of the season takes place at lakes and beaches. Camping grounds and holiday parks fill to capacity, and ferries to the Wadden Islands run extra services to meet demand.
