Boxing Day(ボクシング・デー) の ナイジェリア

現地の挨拶: Happy Boxing Day!

Boxing Day in Nigeria, observed on December 26, extends the Christmas festivities with a focus on community, visiting, and outdoor celebrations. While Christmas Day is spent with immediate family, Boxing Day is the day to visit extended family, friends, and neighbors, continuing the spirit of the season.

Parties, outdoor events, and community gatherings define the day. In many Nigerian cities and towns, Boxing Day is the occasion for street parties, music concerts, and cultural festivals. DJs set up sound systems, and neighbors dance in the streets. In Lagos, beach parties at Elegushi and Lekki draw large crowds enjoying music, food, and the ocean breeze.

Food continues to flow abundantly. Jollof rice, fried rice, pounded yam with assorted soups, suya (grilled spiced meat skewers), and small chops (Nigerian party finger foods including spring rolls, puff puff, and samosas) are served at gatherings. Drinks range from palm wine and Chapman (a Nigerian cocktail) to Maltina and soft drinks.

In some regions, Boxing Day coincides with traditional masquerade festivals and cultural performances. The Igbo masquerades in the southeast and various cultural dances across the country add a distinctly Nigerian flavor to the post-Christmas celebration. Many Nigerians also use Boxing Day for charitable activities, visiting orphanages and hospitals with gifts.
