Christmas in Nigeria is a massive homecoming event. Millions of Nigerians living in Lagos, Abuja, and other cities travel back to their home villages to celebrate with extended family. The roads, particularly the Lagos-Benin and Lagos-Onitsha expressways, become packed with vehicles in what is one of the country's largest annual migrations.

The celebration varies by region and ethnic group, but food is always central. Jollof rice, the iconic West African dish, takes pride of place on every Christmas table, alongside fried rice, pepper soup, fried chicken, moi moi (steamed bean pudding), and pounded yam with egusi soup. In the southeast, which has a large Christian population, families also serve ofe nsala (white soup) and abacha (African salad).

Churches hold special Christmas services that are joyous, musical affairs. Choirs perform elaborate arrangements, and congregations dress in their finest outfits, often in coordinated family asoebi (matching fabric) styles. After church, families visit neighbors and friends, sharing food and drinks in an open-house tradition.

In the northern states with large Muslim populations, Christmas is more subdued but still acknowledged. Lagos and southern cities put up lights and decorations, and masquerades and cultural performances add a uniquely Nigerian dimension. Fireworks called knockouts or banger are popular with children, and the festive atmosphere continues through New Year's Day.
