Christmas in South Africa arrives during the warmest time of year, and the celebration reflects the country's incredible cultural diversity. The Rainbow Nation's Christmas blends Afrikaner, British, Zulu, Xhosa, and other traditions into a uniquely South African experience. Summer weather means the holiday is often spent outdoors.

The Christmas meal is typically a braai (barbecue), the social ritual at the heart of South African life. Families grill boerewors (farmer's sausage), lamb chops, sosaties (skewered meat), and chicken. Side dishes include mealie pap (corn porridge), potato salad, and chakalaka (spicy vegetable relish). Malva pudding, a sweet spongy dessert with apricot jam and cream, is the classic South African Christmas dessert. Trifle, mince pies, and koeksisters (syrup-soaked twisted pastries) also appear.

Many South Africans head to the coast for the December holidays. The stretch of coastline in KwaZulu-Natal and the Garden Route becomes packed with families camping, surfing, and enjoying the outdoors. In Cape Town, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront hosts a large Christmas market with local crafts and food.

Christmas crackers and paper hats, inherited from British tradition, are common at the dinner table. Carols by Candlelight events take place in parks and amphitheaters across the country. December 16, the Day of Reconciliation, adds a uniquely South African public holiday to the season, extending the festive period.
