Diwali in Malaysia, known as Deepavali, is a national public holiday celebrated primarily by the country's Tamil Hindu community but enjoyed by Malaysians of all backgrounds. The celebration reflects the Malaysian tradition of multiethnic participation in each community's festivals.

Hindu families prepare for Deepavali by cleaning and decorating their homes, drawing kolam patterns with rice flour at their doorsteps, and stringing oil lamps and fairy lights. New clothes are purchased, with women wearing vibrant saris and men donning veshtis or kurtas. On the morning of Deepavali, families perform an oil bath ritual, visit temples for special prayers, and light oil lamps.

The open house tradition is central to Malaysian Deepavali. Hindu families welcome visitors of all races and religions with generous spreads of traditional food: murukku, vadai, payasam, kesari, and various rice dishes. The banana leaf meal is a special treat, with rice served alongside an array of curries, pickles, and papadam on a fresh banana leaf.

In Kuala Lumpur, the Brickfields area, known as Little India, comes alive with Deepavali bazaars selling saris, jewelry, and kolam supplies. The Malaysian Prime Minister and politicians host open houses that draw thousands. The celebration exemplifies Malaysia's muhibbah spirit, the harmonious coexistence of diverse communities.
