Good Friday(聖金曜日) の フィリピン
現地の挨拶: Mahal na Araw
Good Friday in the Philippines, known as Biyernes Santo, is the most intense day of religious observance in Southeast Asia. The entire nation effectively shuts down: businesses close, public transport ceases, and television stations broadcast only religious programming. Streets empty as Filipinos observe the day with prayer, fasting, and dramatic acts of penance.
The most striking tradition is the real-life crucifixion in San Fernando, Pampanga, where devotees are nailed to wooden crosses with sterilized stainless steel nails and hung for several minutes. While the Catholic Church officially discourages the practice, it continues as an act of extreme devotion, panata, or a fulfilled vow for answered prayers.
Flagellants, called magdarame, walk barefoot through the streets, whipping their bloodied backs with bamboo flails. Penitents crawl on their knees through rough streets, and others carry heavy wooden crosses for miles. These acts are performed as thanksgiving for miracles received or as prayers for healing.
More quietly, families gather at home for the Pabasa, a continuous chanting of the Pasyon, a verse narrative of Christ's life and death, that can last from Holy Wednesday through Good Friday. The traditional meal is simple, often featuring ginataang tulingan or other fish dishes, as meat is strictly avoided.
