New Year's Day(元日) の デンマーク

現地の挨拶: Godt nytar!

Nytarsdag in Denmark follows one of Europe's more whimsical New Year's Eve traditions. Danes famously throw unused plates and glasses against the front doors of friends and family at midnight, and finding a large pile of broken crockery on your doorstep on January 1st is a sign of many friendships. Another tradition involves standing on a chair and jumping off at midnight, literally leaping into the new year.

The Queen's (now King's) New Year's speech, broadcast at 6 PM on December 31st, is a cherished tradition. Nearly the entire nation tunes in, and the speech often sets the tone for national reflection. After the royal address, families gather for a festive dinner of cod or plaice, boiled potatoes, mustard sauce, and kransekage (a towering cone of marzipan rings).

On January 1st itself, Danes enjoy a late brunch, often featuring rundstykker (bread rolls), cold cuts, cheese, and strong coffee. Many take nytarstur (New Year's walks) through forests or along the coast, braving the cold Danish winter air.

Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, which reopens for a special winter season including New Year's, draws crowds with its lights and amusement rides. The Danish concept of hygge (cosiness) defines much of the day, as families settle in with candles, blankets, and board games after the revelry of the previous night.
