Protochronia (New Year's Day) in Greece is the feast day of Saint Basil (Agios Vasileios), who in Greek tradition is the equivalent of Santa Claus. It is Saint Basil, not Santa, who brings gifts to Greek children on January 1st, making the day doubly significant as both a secular and religious celebration.

The centrepiece of Greek New Year is the vasilopita, a cake or bread baked with a hidden coin inside. The head of the household ceremonially cuts slices for each family member, with the first piece dedicated to Christ, the second to the Virgin Mary, the third to Saint Basil, and the fourth to the house itself. Whoever finds the coin is blessed with good luck for the year.

Greeks play cards on New Year's Eve and Day, a tradition that ranges from casual family games to high-stakes gambling. The belief is that luck at cards on New Year's foretells a fortunate year. Pomegranates are smashed on doorsteps at midnight for prosperity, their scattered seeds symbolizing abundance.

On January 1st, families attend church services, exchange gifts, and gather for elaborate meals featuring roast lamb or pork, spanakopita, and seasonal salads. Children go door to door singing kalanda (New Year's carols), accompanied by triangles and small drums, receiving coins and sweets from neighbours.

The first day of the Gregorian calendar year, celebrated worldwide with fireworks, parties, and resolutions marking fresh beginnings on January 1.
