New Year's Eve(大晦日) の アルゼンチン

現地の挨拶: Feliz Ano Nuevo!

Nochevieja in Argentina is a midsummer celebration, with December 31st falling during the hottest time of year. Families gather outdoors for a late asado (barbecue) that starts around 10 PM and builds toward midnight. The grill features beef ribs, chorizo, sweetbreads, and provoleta (grilled provolone), accompanied by chimichurri and criolla salad.

At midnight, the sky above Buenos Aires erupts with fireworks launched from terraces, balconies, and public spaces. The most spectacular displays illuminate the Puerto Madero waterfront and the Obelisco on Avenida 9 de Julio. Sidra (cider) is the traditional midnight toast, consumed in quantities that make Argentina one of the world's highest per-capita cider consumers.

Argentine New Year's Eve traditions include wearing pink underwear for romance, eating lentils for prosperity, and a workplace tradition where office workers throw shredded old papers and calendars from windows on the last working day, creating snowstorms of white paper in the microcentro (financial district) of Buenos Aires.

After midnight, many Argentines head to boliches (nightclubs) or continue celebrating at house parties until sunrise. The warm summer nights make outdoor celebrations comfortable, and the spirit is one of exuberant togetherness. By January 1st, many families are already packing for their veraneo (summer vacation) to the coast or mountains.
