Tanabata vs Qixi Festival

Japan's Star Festival and China's Qixi share the same ancient legend of celestial lovers separated by the Milky Way — yet the two festivals have evolved into distinctly different celebrations.

Tanabata and Qixi both originate from the same Chinese legend of Niu Lang (the Cowherd, identified with the star Altair) and Zhi Nu (the Weaver Girl, identified with Vega), who are separated by the Milky Way and allowed to meet only once a year when magpies form a bridge. Qixi is observed on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month and has become China's 'Valentine's Day', while Tanabata — the Japanese adaptation introduced in the Nara period — is celebrated on 7 July and centres on wishing rituals and colourful paper decorations.

결론

Though they share a single mythological source, Tanabata and Qixi have diverged over centuries into distinctive festivals. Tanabata is a wish-making, community celebration with colourful festivals and paper streamers, while Qixi has become a modern romantic holiday with commercial gift-giving — yet both preserve the poignant beauty of the star-crossed lovers' reunion.
