<holidayfyi-glossary slug="samba"></holidayfyi-glossary>A Brazilian musical genre and dance that is the centerpiece of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival, rooted in African rhythms brought by enslaved Africans and merged with European and indigenous influences. Samba schools compete in elaborate choreographed parades along the Sambadrome. The term encompasses both the fast-paced carnavalesco samba and the slower samba de gafieira (ballroom samba).
