The Assumption of Mary on August 15th, known in Spain as la Asuncion de la Virgen, is a national public holiday and one of the most important Marian feasts in this historically Catholic country. The holiday coincides with the height of summer, and celebrations combine religious devotion with festive traditions unique to each region.

The most spectacular celebration takes place in Elche, Alicante, where the Misteri d'Elx, a medieval liturgical drama depicting the Assumption, has been performed continuously since the fifteenth century and is designated a UNESCO Masterpiece of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The two-act play features elaborate staging with actors descending from the dome of the Basilica of Santa Maria on a mechanical device representing heaven.

Across Spain, towns hold processions carrying images of the Virgin Mary through the streets. In the Basque Country, Virgen Blanca celebrations in Vitoria-Gasteiz feature the iconic descent of Celedón, a figure that ziplines from a church tower to the square below. In Seville, the Virgin de los Reyes is processed through the cathedral quarter.

August 15th also coincides with many local fiestas patronales. Bull runs, verbenas, open-air concerts, and community meals take place across the country. The traditional meal features seasonal specialties: gazpacho, grilled sardines, ensaladilla rusa, and fresh fruit. Fireworks displays cap the evening celebrations.
