Christmas(크리스마스) ~에서 이탈리아

현지 인사말: Buon Natale!

Christmas in Italy, or Natale, is deeply rooted in Catholic tradition and regional diversity. The holiday season begins on December 8 with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, when families set up their presepe (nativity scene) and Christmas tree. The presepe is an art form in Italy, and Naples is especially famous for its elaborate handcrafted nativity displays on Via San Gregorio Armeno.

Christmas Eve, La Vigilia, is marked by the Feast of the Seven Fishes, particularly in southern Italy and among Italian-American communities. The meal features an abundance of seafood including baccala (salt cod), clams, calamari, shrimp, and eel. In other regions, a lighter meatless meal is served before Midnight Mass.

Christmas Day lunch is the main family gathering, often lasting several hours. The meal typically includes tortellini in brodo (stuffed pasta in broth), followed by roast meats such as lamb, veal, or capon. Panettone, the tall domed sweet bread studded with candied fruit and raisins, is served across the north, while pandoro, a golden star-shaped cake from Verona, competes for holiday dessert supremacy. In the south, struffoli (fried honey balls) and cartellate are popular.

Italian children receive gifts from Babbo Natale on Christmas Day, but the traditional gift-giver in many regions is La Befana, a kindly old woman who delivers presents on Epiphany Eve, January 5. The holiday season thus extends well into January.
