Christmas(크리스마스) ~에서 일본
현지 인사말: メリークリスマス!
Christmas in Japan is not a national holiday and has no religious significance for most Japanese, yet it has become one of the most popular commercial and social events of the year. Japan's Christmas is a fascinating cultural adaptation, turning the holiday into something entirely its own.
The most famous Japanese Christmas tradition is eating KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) on Christmas Eve. A wildly successful 1974 marketing campaign, Kurisumasu ni wa Kentakkii (Kentucky for Christmas), created a tradition so ingrained that families now place orders weeks in advance to secure their Christmas chicken buckets. Japanese Christmas cake, a light sponge cake with whipped cream and strawberries, is equally essential.
Christmas Eve is treated as a romantic date night, similar to Valentine's Day. Couples dress up, exchange gifts, and dine at fancy restaurants. Illumination displays transform city centers into spectacular light shows, with venues like Roppongi Hills, Marunouchi, and Kobe Luminarie drawing enormous crowds. Department stores create elaborate Christmas window displays and play holiday music throughout December.
For families with children, Christmas trees and gift-giving from Santa-san have become widespread. However, the deeply family-centered holiday in Japan is not Christmas but New Year (Oshogatsu), which is when families gather, visit temples and shrines, and exchange formal gifts. Christmas in Japan is about fun, romance, and spectacle rather than tradition and family.
