Christmas(크리스마스) ~에서 멕시코
현지 인사말: Feliz Navidad!
Mexican Christmas, or Navidad, is a vibrant, extended celebration deeply intertwined with Catholic faith and indigenous traditions. The season begins on December 16 with Las Posadas, nine nights of candlelit processions reenacting Mary and Joseph's search for shelter. Neighbors take turns hosting, offering ponche navideño (warm fruit punch) and buñuelos (fried dough with sugar) to participants.
Each Posada culminates in a party with a piñata, traditionally shaped as a seven-pointed star representing the seven deadly sins. Breaking the piñata symbolizes triumph over temptation, and the candy and fruit that spill out represent divine blessings. Children and adults alike eagerly await their turn to swing.
Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) is the main celebration, surpassing Christmas Day in importance. Families gather for a late-night feast featuring bacalao a la vizcaina (salt cod in tomato sauce), romeritos (a native plant cooked in mole sauce with shrimp patties), tamales in endless varieties, and ensalada de Nochebuena (a salad of beets, apples, and nuts). Turkey, or pavo, has also become common.
Midnight Mass, Misa de Gallo, follows the feast. Nacimientos (nativity scenes) are displayed in homes and churches, and many feature elaborate landscapes with real moss, sand, and tiny clay figures. Flor de Nochebuena, the poinsettia, is native to Mexico and is the iconic Christmas decoration.
