Christmas(크리스마스) ~에서 포르투갈
현지 인사말: Feliz Natal!
Christmas in Portugal is a deeply family-oriented holiday rooted in Catholic tradition. The season begins with the decoration of the presepio, the nativity scene, which holds a more prominent place in Portuguese homes than the Christmas tree. Some families maintain presepios that have been passed down for generations, with hand-painted figurines and moss-covered landscapes.
The most important meal is the Consoada, the Christmas Eve supper. The centerpiece is bacalhau cozido, boiled salted cod served with boiled potatoes, cabbage, carrots, and hard-boiled eggs, drizzled with olive oil. Portugal's love of bacalhau means this dish appears on virtually every Christmas table in the country. After supper, families attend Missa do Galo (Midnight Mass).
Desserts are the true stars of Portuguese Christmas. The table groans under rabanadas (Portuguese French toast soaked in cinnamon sugar), filhos (fried dough), arroz doce (rice pudding), aletria (sweet vermicelli), bolo rei (king cake with candied fruit), and sonhos (sweet fried dough balls). Tradition holds that the dessert table should not be cleared until Epiphany, January 6.
In rural areas, the tradition of the cepo de Natal, a large Yule log burned throughout Christmas night, persists. Gifts are exchanged either on Christmas Eve after the Consoada or on Christmas morning, depending on the family's tradition.
