Diwali in the United States has evolved from a community celebration into a nationally recognized event, reflecting the growing prominence of the Indian-American community. In 2022, the White House hosted its largest-ever Diwali reception, and the US Postal Service issued a commemorative Diwali stamp, cementing the festival's place in American culture.

Major Diwali celebrations take place across the country. In New York, the Diwali at Times Square event features performances on a grand stage, and South Street Seaport hosts fireworks. The BAPS Swaminarayan temples across the country hold elaborate celebrations with traditional rituals, cultural programs, and vegetarian feasts for thousands. In the San Francisco Bay Area, home to a large Indian tech community, Diwali events dot the calendar throughout October and November.

Indian-American families celebrate at home with traditional puja, lighting diyas, making rangoli, and preparing sweets. The diversity of India is reflected in American Diwali tables, with Gujarati families making dhokla and fafda, Punjabi families preparing chole bhature, and South Indian families serving payasam and murukku.

Diwali has also become a commercial event. Major retailers offer Diwali sales, grocery chains stock Indian sweets and snacks, and Bollywood music plays in shopping malls. Many American schools and universities host Diwali nights, and corporate America increasingly acknowledges the festival with events and flexible scheduling.
