Good Friday(성금요일) ~에서 독일

현지 인사말: Stille Grusse zum Karfreitag

Good Friday, or Karfreitag, is one of the most solemnly observed holidays in Germany and is a nationwide public holiday. It is sometimes called the quietest day of the year, as strict regulations in many German states prohibit public dancing, loud music, and even sporting events. Cinemas and theaters are closed or restricted to showing appropriately somber content.

Churches hold services centered on readings of the Passion narrative and the veneration of the cross. Many congregations strip their altars bare, remove flowers, and veil crosses and images in black or purple cloth. The singing of Bach's St. Matthew Passion or St. John Passion has been a German tradition since the eighteenth century, and performances take place in churches and concert halls across the country.

The traditional Good Friday meal is fish, most commonly carp in southern Germany or herring in the north. Families prepare simple meals in keeping with the day's austere character. In some regions, pretzels are associated with Good Friday, their twisted shape said to represent arms crossed in prayer.

In the Bavarian village of Oberammergau, the world-famous Passion Play has been performed every ten years since 1634 in fulfillment of a vow made during a plague epidemic. The production involves over two thousand villagers and draws visitors from around the world.
