현지 인사말: Buddha Purnima ki Shubhkamnaye

Vesak in India, known as Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti, commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Siddhartha Gautama in the land of his birth. The festival falls on the full moon of the Hindu month of Vaishakha and is a gazetted public holiday. While Buddhists are a small minority in modern India, the holiday is respected across religious lines.

The most significant celebrations take place at the four great pilgrimage sites. Bodh Gaya, where the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree, draws tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the Buddhist world. The Mahabodhi Temple is decorated with flowers and lights, and monks from diverse Buddhist traditions chant throughout the day. Sarnath, Lumbini (just across the border in Nepal), and Kushinagar also see large gatherings.

Indian Buddhists, including the Dalit Buddhist community that follows the tradition of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, celebrate with visits to viharas, prayer services, and community gatherings. Ambedkar's conversion to Buddhism in 1956 created a large neo-Buddhist community that observes Buddha Purnima with particular devotion. Deekshabhoomi in Nagpur is a major gathering point.

The celebration includes processions, the ritual bathing of the Buddha statue, distribution of sweets, and lectures on Buddhist teachings. Many devotees wear white, eat vegetarian meals, and visit the poor and sick. Government buildings are illuminated, and the President of India traditionally hosts a Buddha Purnima event.
