<holidayfyi-glossary slug="bank-holiday"></holidayfyi-glossary>A term originating in the United Kingdom for a public holiday on which banks and many businesses are closed. The term comes from the Bank Holidays Act 1871, which designated specific days when banks were not required to open. Today it is used interchangeably with 'public holiday' in Britain, Ireland, and some Commonwealth nations.
