All Saints' Day(Dia de Todos os Santos) em França

Saudação Local: Bonne fete de la Toussaint

All Saints' Day, or la Toussaint, on November 1st is a national public holiday in France and marks the beginning of a two-week autumn school vacation. While France is a secular republic, the holiday retains its religious character, and millions of French people visit cemeteries to honor their dead, even those who rarely attend church.

The tradition of visiting cemeteries and placing chrysanthemums on graves is deeply embedded in French culture. Chrysanthemums are so strongly associated with death in France that giving them as a gift at any other time is considered a faux pas. Florists display magnificent chrysanthemum arrangements in the weeks before la Toussaint, and cemetery flower sales account for a significant portion of the annual floral market.

In Brittany, the traditions surrounding la Toussaint are particularly rich, reflecting Celtic influences. In some Breton communities, milk and pancakes are left out for the souls of the dead, and the Ankou, a figure of Death from Breton folklore, features in local legend. In Corsica, families gather for the traditional meal of fiadone, a cheesecake, and brocciu fritters.

French churches hold Masses honoring all saints, and the following day, November 2nd (All Souls' Day), is dedicated specifically to prayers for the departed. The holiday period has also become associated with autumn activities: gathering chestnuts, mushroom foraging, and enjoying the last warmth before winter.
