Lunar New Year in Taiwan (Nongli Xinnian) is the island's most important holiday, with a government-designated five-day break that brings the country to a virtual standstill. The highlight is the nian ye fan (New Year's Eve reunion dinner), and Taiwan's high-speed rail, trains, and buses are packed in the days before as people return to family homes.

Taiwanese New Year cuisine blends Hokkien, Hakka, and mainland Chinese influences. Hotpot is increasingly popular for the reunion dinner, though traditional dishes remain: steamed fish, braised pork knuckle (ti-kha), longevity noodles, fa gao (prosperity cakes), and nian gao. In Hakka communities, sweet and savoury ban (rice cakes) are essential.

Hongbao (red envelopes) are given generously, and the amounts are carefully considered based on relationships. Married couples give to their parents, unmarried adults receive from married relatives, and children collect enthusiastically from every elder they visit. Digital red envelopes via Line Pay and other platforms are now common.

Temples across Taiwan are packed during the New Year period. Longshan Temple in Taipei and Nankunshen Daitian Temple in Tainan see enormous crowds. The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, while technically on the Lantern Festival (day 15), is one of the most spectacular visual celebrations of the Lunar New Year season in all of Asia.
