Christmas(Natal) em Alemanha
Saudação Local: Frohe Weihnachten!
German Christmas traditions have shaped how much of the world celebrates the holiday. The season begins with the first Sunday of Advent, when families light the first candle on their Adventskranz, a wreath holding four candles. Children eagerly open doors on their Adventskalender each morning throughout December.
The iconic Weihnachtsmarkt, or Christmas market, is central to German holiday life. Cities like Nuremberg, Dresden, and Cologne host markets that draw millions of visitors. Stalls sell Gluhwein (mulled wine), Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Bratwurst, Stollen (a fruit bread dusted with powdered sugar), and handcrafted ornaments. The smell of roasted almonds and cinnamon fills the cold air.
Christmas Eve, or Heiligabend, is the main celebration day. Families exchange gifts in the evening, often after a church service. In many homes, a bell is rung to signal that the Christkind (Christ Child) has delivered the presents under the tree. The Christmas tree itself is traditionally decorated with real candles, glass baubles, and straw stars.
The holiday meal on Christmas Eve is often simple, such as potato salad with sausages or carp, while Christmas Day brings a more elaborate feast of roast goose or duck with Rotkohl (red cabbage) and Kloss (potato dumplings). Dessert typically includes Christstollen, Vanillekipferl (vanilla crescent cookies), and Zimtsterne (cinnamon star cookies).
