Christmas(Natal) em Noruega
Saudação Local: God Jul!
Norwegian Christmas, or Jul, is celebrated with traditions that stretch back to Viking-era midwinter festivals. The season begins with the first Sunday of Advent, and by mid-December homes are filled with the scent of baking. Norwegian families bake seven types of Christmas cookies, known as syv slag, a tradition that includes varieties like krumkake (waffle cookies), sandkaker (sand tarts), berlinerkranser (Berlin wreaths), and fattigmann (poor man's cookies).
Julaften (Christmas Eve) is the main event. The traditional dinner varies by region: in western Norway, pinnekjott (dried and salted lamb ribs steamed over birch twigs) is king, while in eastern Norway, svineribbe (crispy pork belly) dominates. Lutefisk, dried cod treated with lye, is a polarizing traditional dish that some Norwegians adore and others avoid entirely. The meal often includes risengrynsgraut (rice porridge) with a hidden almond.
After dinner, families circle the Christmas tree holding hands and singing carols before opening gifts. The Julenisse, a farm gnome figure, is the Norwegian gift-bringer. Children leave a bowl of porridge in the barn for the nisse to keep him happy.
Norway gives a giant Christmas tree to London each year in gratitude for British support during World War II, a tradition since 1947. The tree stands in Trafalgar Square and is a symbol of the enduring bond between the two nations.
