Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country, and Christmas is not an official holiday or widely observed. However, the country has a deep historical connection to Christmas through Saint Nicholas of Myra, the 4th-century bishop who inspired the Santa Claus legend. The ancient church of Saint Nicholas in Demre (ancient Myra) on the Mediterranean coast is a pilgrimage site and archaeological treasure.

Istanbul's small but historic Christian communities, including Greek Orthodox, Armenian, and Catholic congregations, celebrate Christmas with church services. The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the spiritual center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, holds a significant Christmas liturgy at the Church of Saint George in the Fener district. Armenian Christmas is celebrated on January 6.

While Christmas is not a public holiday, Turkey celebrates New Year's Eve (Yilbasi) with many Christmas-like traditions. Families set up decorated trees, exchange gifts, and prepare a festive dinner with turkey (hindi in Turkish, coincidentally). Noel Baba (Father Christmas) brings gifts to children on New Year's Eve rather than Christmas. Shopping malls and hotels put up elaborate decorations.

The Antakya region in southeastern Turkey, home to one of the earliest Christian communities, celebrates Christmas more prominently. The Church of Saint Peter, considered one of the world's first churches, holds special services that draw both local Christians and tourists.
