Eid al-Fitr in Saudi Arabia, known locally as Eid al-Saghir or the Lesser Eid, marks the joyous conclusion of Ramadan with three to four days of celebration. The festival begins after the official sighting of the new crescent moon, announced by the Supreme Court. Saudis wake early for the Eid prayer, performed in mosques and open musallas across the kingdom, with men, women, and children donning their finest clothes.

Family gatherings are the heart of the celebration. Extended families come together for lavish feasts featuring kabsa, a spiced rice and lamb dish, along with kunafa, baklava, ma'amoul date-filled cookies, and Saudi coffee with dates. Children receive Eidiyah, cash gifts in decorated envelopes, from parents, grandparents, and relatives, and they often spend it at the amusement parks and carnivals that spring up for the holiday.

Saudi cities transform during Eid. Parks and public spaces host fireworks displays, cultural performances, and light shows. Riyadh Season and Jeddah Season entertainment events often coincide with Eid, offering concerts, theatrical performances, and family activities that were unimaginable just a few years ago as the country modernizes its entertainment landscape.

Charity is central to the celebration. Zakat al-Fitr, an obligatory charitable contribution, is paid before the Eid prayer to ensure that everyone, including the poor, can celebrate. Families also distribute food parcels and gifts to those in need.
