Mooncakes are the quintessential Mid-Autumn Festival food, and the gifting and eating of these dense pastries is central to the celebration. Traditional mooncakes feature fillings of lotus seed paste or red bean paste with salted egg yolks representing the full moon. Regional varieties include Cantonese, Suzhou, and Beijing-style mooncakes, each with distinctive crusts and fillings. In recent decades, creative flavors like ice cream, chocolate, and fruit mooncakes have gained popularity, particularly among younger generations.

Moon gazing is a poetic tradition at the heart of the festival. Families gather outdoors, often in parks or on rooftops, to admire the full moon while sharing mooncakes and pomelos. The legend of Chang'e, the moon goddess who drank an elixir of immortality and ascended to the moon, is retold each year. Lanterns in various shapes and sizes are lit and displayed, with children carrying colorful lanterns through the streets.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is fundamentally about family reunion. It is sometimes called the second Spring Festival because of the emphasis on gathering with family. Workers travel home from distant cities, and families who may be separated for most of the year come together for a shared meal. The round shape of the mooncake and the full moon both symbolize completeness and togetherness, making this festival a profound expression of Chinese family values.
