Ano Novo em México

Saudação Local: Feliz Ano Nuevo!

Ano Nuevo in Mexico is a family-centred holiday that continues the festive season running from the Posadas (December 16th) through Dia de Reyes (January 6th). After a midnight abrazo (hug) and toast with sidra (sparkling cider) or champagne, families gather on January 1st for a late breakfast or comida featuring tamales, pozole, menudo, or birria.

Menudo, a tripe soup seasoned with guajillo chillies, oregano, and lime, is considered the ultimate cruda (hangover) cure and is served in homes and restaurants across the country on New Year's morning. In some regions, barbacoa or carnitas replace menudo as the recovery meal of choice.

Mexican New Year's traditions include wearing coloured underwear (red for love, yellow for prosperity, green for health), sweeping the house outward to clear out bad energy, and carrying an empty suitcase around the block to attract travel in the new year. Some families place coins in their shoes or eat twelve grapes at midnight, a tradition shared with Spain.

January 1st is a quiet, family day in contrast to the exuberant midnight celebrations. Many Mexican families attend Mass, visit relatives, and begin preparations for the Rosca de Reyes, the oval sweet bread decorated with candied fruit that will be shared on January 6th.
