Saudação Local: Happy New Year!

New Year's Day in the United States is defined by two pillars: football and food. Tens of millions tune in to the Rose Bowl and other college bowl games, while households prepare regional spreads ranging from black-eyed peas and collard greens in the South (symbolizing coins and dollars) to pork and sauerkraut in Pennsylvania Dutch country.

The day follows one of the biggest party nights of the year, so brunch culture thrives on January 1st. Diners and restaurants across the country serve Bloody Marys and eggs Benedict to crowds recovering from Times Square countdowns, house parties, and fireworks displays in every time zone from Honolulu to New York.

Many Americans use the day as a reset, writing New Year's resolutions that often focus on health, finances, or personal growth. Gyms see a surge in membership sign-ups, and stores run massive post-holiday sales. The Mummers' Parade in Philadelphia, a tradition dating back to the 1800s, features elaborate costumes and string bands marching through the city streets.

The Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, is another iconic tradition. Flower-covered floats roll down Colorado Boulevard before the Rose Bowl game, drawing roughly 700,000 spectators along the route and millions more on television.
