New Year's Eve(Réveillon) em Nova Zelândia

Saudação Local: Happy New Year!

As one of the first countries to welcome the new year, New Zealand's celebrations begin while much of the world is still on December 31st morning. Gisborne on the East Cape holds particular significance as the first city in the world to see the new sunrise, and the annual Rhythm and Vines music festival there has become a pilgrimage for New Year revellers.

Auckland's Sky Tower countdown is the country's most iconic event, with fireworks launched from the tower itself creating a vertical cascade of light visible from across the Hauraki Gulf. Wellington's waterfront, Napier's Marine Parade, and Queenstown's lakeside all host their own celebrations.

The warm summer weather means most Kiwis celebrate outdoors. Beach bonfires, backyard barbecues, and camping trips are the norm. Many New Zealanders are already on their summer holidays by December 31st, staying at baches (holiday homes) in places like the Coromandel Peninsula, Abel Tasman, and the Bay of Islands.

Seafood features prominently in New Year's Eve meals: green-lipped mussels, crayfish (rock lobster), paua (abalone), and snapper fresh from the day's fishing. New Zealand sauvignon blanc and pinot noir from Marlborough and Central Otago are the wines of choice, and the midnight toast is followed by a late-night swim for the adventurous.
