Pentecost(Pentecostes) em Países Baixos
Saudação Local: Fijne Pinksteren
Pentecost in the Netherlands, known as Pinksteren, is a two-day public holiday with both Eerste Pinksterdag (Whit Sunday) and Tweede Pinksterdag (Whit Monday) observed as official days off. The holiday weekend is one of the most popular for short breaks and outdoor activities in the Dutch calendar.
Religious observances include special services in churches across the country, with many congregations holding outdoor services in parks and gardens to celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is a traditional time for confirmations in the Dutch Reformed and Catholic churches. Churches are decorated with peonies, roses, and other late-spring flowers.
The Pinksterbloem, or Whitsun flower (usually a peony or rhododendron), is associated with the holiday. In some rural areas, traditional Pinkster customs survive, including the election of a Pinksterkoning or Pinksterbruid, Whitsun king or bride, and village processions. In the Twente region, Pinksterbruiloft celebrations feature costumed processions.
The Pinksteren weekend is peak season for outdoor festivals, camping trips, and visits to the coast and countryside. The Pinkpop music festival, one of the world's longest-running pop festivals, traditionally takes place over the Pentecost weekend in Landgraaf, Limburg. Dutch families cycle through the countryside, visit the tulip fields' late blooms, and enjoy barbecues and terrace dining in the long spring evenings.
