<holidayfyi-glossary slug="pasola"></holidayfyi-glossary>A ritual mounted spear-throwing contest held in West Sumba, Indonesia, as part of the Nyale harvest festival when sea worms emerge at the beach. Two teams of horsemen charge each other and hurl blunted wooden spears in a ceremony believed to ensure a good harvest; blood spilled is seen as a blessing for the land. Pasola is a deeply spiritual event governed by animist beliefs and presided over by ritual priests (ratos).
