Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary(Успение Пресвятой Богородицы) в Греция
Местное приветствие: Chronia Polla
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15th, known in Greece as Koimisis tis Theotokou (Dormition of the Mother of God), is the most important summer religious holiday and one of the most widely observed feasts in the Greek Orthodox calendar. The fifteen days of fasting that precede it, the Dekapentavgoustos, are observed by many Greeks.
The island of Tinos is the spiritual center of the Greek Assumption celebration. The Church of Panagia Evangelistria houses a miraculous icon, and on August 15th tens of thousands of pilgrims descend on the tiny island. Many crawl on their knees from the port up the hill to the church, a distance of several hundred meters, in fulfillment of vows. The icon is carried in a grand procession through the streets.
Every church in Greece holds a special liturgy, and villages and islands with churches dedicated to the Panagia (Virgin Mary) celebrate their patronal feast with particular enthusiasm. Panigiria, communal festivals with food, music, and dancing, follow the religious services. The celebrations can last well into the night with live bouzouki music and traditional dancing.
August 15th falls at the peak of the Greek summer, and the holiday combines religious devotion with vacation festivity. Tavernas serve special meals featuring fresh fish, lamb, moussaka, and seasonal fruits. The scent of jasmine and bougainvillea fills the warm evening air as communities celebrate under the stars. For the Greek diaspora, many make a point of being in Greece for this beloved holiday.
