The lighting of the hanukkiyah at home is the central observance. French Jewish families gather each evening to light candles, recite blessings, and share traditional foods. In Paris, the Jewish quarter of the Marais comes alive during Hanukkah, with bakeries on Rue des Rosiers selling sufganiyot alongside their usual offerings of falafel and challah.

Public menorah lightings take place at the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Elysees, and in cities across France. These events, organized by Chabad and community organizations, feature music, latkes, and speeches by community leaders and sometimes government officials.
