<holidayfyi-glossary slug="julian-calendar"></holidayfyi-glossary>The predecessor to the Gregorian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 BCE, with a year of 365.25 days achieved by adding a leap day every four years. The Julian calendar drifted from the solar year over centuries, prompting the Gregorian reform. Eastern Orthodox churches still use the Julian calendar for calculating religious holidays, placing Christmas on January 7 in Gregorian terms.
