Easter in Germany, known as Ostern, is one of the most important holidays of the year, with both Good Friday and Easter Monday observed as public holidays. The Easter egg tradition runs deep in German culture, as the concept of the Osterhase, or Easter Hare, originated in German Lutheran writings of the seventeenth century.

Families decorate branches with colorful painted eggs to create Osterbaum, Easter trees that brighten homes and gardens. Whole towns participate in this tradition, and the village of Saalfeld in Thuringia is famous for its Ostereierbaum decorated with over ten thousand eggs. Children search gardens for hidden nests of eggs and chocolate left by the Easter Hare.

Easter bonfires, or Osterfeuer, blaze across northern Germany on Holy Saturday evening, an ancient custom meant to drive out winter and welcome spring. Communities gather around these fires to socialize and enjoy Feuerzangenbowle. Traditional Easter foods include Osterbrot, a sweet braided bread, and roast lamb or Lammkeule with fresh spring vegetables.

In Bavaria, the tradition of Georgiritt sees elaborately decorated horses ridden in procession to be blessed by the local priest, while in parts of the Rhineland, Ostereierwerfen involves teams tossing eggs across fields in competitive relays.

The most important Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after crucifixion, observed worldwide with sunrise services, egg hunts, and family gatherings.
