Yerel Selamlama: Wesolych Swiat!

Polish Christmas, or Boze Narodzenie, is one of the most tradition-rich celebrations in Europe. The most important event is Wigilia, the Christmas Eve supper, which begins when the first star appears in the evening sky. An extra place is always set at the table for an unexpected guest, reflecting the Polish value of hospitality.

Wigilia is a meatless meal consisting of twelve dishes, symbolizing the twelve apostles. Traditional dishes include barszcz (clear beetroot soup) with uszka (small mushroom-filled dumplings), fried carp, pierogi with sauerkraut and mushrooms, kutia (wheat berry pudding with poppy seeds and honey), and kompot z suszu (dried fruit compote). Before the meal, family members break oplatek, a thin blessed wafer, sharing it with each person while exchanging wishes.

Hay is placed under the tablecloth to recall the manger where Christ was born. After dinner, families sing kolendy (carols), many dating back centuries, and exchange gifts. Midnight Mass, known as Pasterka (Shepherds' Mass), fills churches across the country.

On Christmas Day and December 26 (the second day of Christmas), families visit relatives and enjoy more elaborate meals featuring roast meats, bigos (hunter's stew), and makowiec (poppy seed roll). The tradition of szopka, ornate nativity scenes built as miniature Krakow architecture, is recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
