Yerel Selamlama: Eid Mubarak / Kol sana wenta tayeb

Eid al-Fitr in Egypt, called Eid el-Fitr or simply el-Eid, is one of the most festive occasions in the Egyptian calendar. The celebration typically lasts three days, and the entire country shifts into a holiday mood. After the Eid prayer in mosques and open grounds, Egyptians greet each other with Eid Mubarak and exchange visits with family and friends.

The defining food of Egyptian Eid is kahk, buttery shortbread cookies dusted with powdered sugar and filled with agameya, a honey-nut mixture, or malban, Turkish delight. Families spend the days before Eid baking massive batches of kahk, and the aroma of these cookies wafts through apartment buildings across Cairo and Alexandria. Other sweets include petit fours, ghorayeba, and basboussa.

Egyptian families celebrate with outings to parks, the Nile corniche, and amusement areas. The Cairo Zoo, Al-Azhar Park, and the Giza Pyramids area are packed with families. Children wear new clothes, receive Eidiyah, and enjoy carnival rides. Street vendors sell cotton candy, roasted nuts, and sugarcane juice.

The tradition of visiting extended family is deeply ingrained. Egyptians travel across the country to visit parents and grandparents, and the roads and trains are packed in the days before Eid. New clothes are purchased for the occasion, and homes are thoroughly cleaned and decorated.
