Good Friday, or Viernes Santo, is the climax of Mexico's deeply felt Semana Santa. Across the country, communities stage elaborate Via Crucis processions reenacting the Stations of the Cross through neighborhood streets. The largest and most famous takes place in Iztapalapa, a working-class borough of Mexico City, where up to two million spectators watch a cast of hundreds perform the Passion, with the actor playing Christ carrying a cross weighing nearly one hundred kilograms through eight kilometers of streets.

In many indigenous communities, the observance takes on unique syncretic forms. The Cora people of the Sierra de Nayarit perform the Judea, a days-long ceremony where painted and masked figures enact a cosmic struggle between good and evil. In Taxco, Guerrero, hooded penitents carry bundles of thorny branches on their backs and drag heavy chains through the cobblestone streets.

The silence on Good Friday is notable. Church bells do not ring, replaced by the clatter of matracas. Many Mexicans observe strict fasting, eating only one full meal and abstaining from meat. Traditional foods include capirotada, a bread pudding where each ingredient carries religious symbolism: bread for the body of Christ, syrup for his blood, cloves for the nails, and cinnamon sticks for the wooden cross.

Street vendors sell nieve de garrafa, handmade ice cream, and tortas de camaron, shrimp fritters in chipotle sauce, to fasting families along procession routes.
