Nowruz (New Day) in Iran is the nation's most important celebration, marking the spring equinox and the beginning of the Persian calendar year. With roots stretching back over 3,000 years to Zoroastrian traditions, Nowruz is far older than the Islamic Republic and transcends religious boundaries, celebrated by Iranians of all faiths.

The centrepiece of every Iranian household is the Haft-Sin table, an arrangement of seven symbolic items beginning with the letter 'sin' (S) in Persian: sabzeh (wheat or lentil sprouts for rebirth), samanu (sweet wheat pudding for affluence), senjed (dried oleaster fruit for love), sir (garlic for medicine), sib (apple for beauty), somaq (sumac for sunrise), and serkeh (vinegar for patience). Additional items like a mirror, candles, painted eggs, goldfish, and a book of poetry (often Hafez) adorn the table.

Chaharshanbe Suri, the fire-jumping festival on the last Wednesday before Nowruz, sees Iranians leap over bonfires chanting 'Zardi-ye man az to, sorkhi-ye to az man' (Give me your redness, take my yellowness). Despite government restrictions, the tradition thrives in streets and rooftops across the country.

The 13-day holiday culminates in Sizdah Bedar (Nature's Day) on the 13th day, when families picnic outdoors and throw their sabzeh sprouts into running water. Young unmarried women tie the sprout blades into knots while wishing for marriage. The holiday period is Iran's longest vacation, and families travel extensively to visit relatives and tourist sites.
