Pentecost in Austria, known as Pfingsten, is a two-day public holiday celebrated with religious devotion, folk traditions, and outdoor leisure. Both Pfingstsonntag and Pfingstmontag are observed, giving Austrians a welcome three-day weekend in late spring or early June.

Austrian churches hold special services with elaborate decorations of greenery, roses, and red vestments symbolizing the Holy Spirit. The tradition of the Pfingstritte, mounted processions through villages and fields to bless the land and livestock, survives in several Austrian regions, particularly in Tyrol and Salzburg. In some Alpine communities, cattle are decorated with flowers and blessed.

In Tyrol, the Pfingstbratl tradition sees young men competing in horse races, and the winner is crowned the Pfingstkonig, Pentecost King. In the Wachau wine region, Pfingsten marks the beginning of the Heurigen season, when wine taverns open their gardens and serve new wine with cold buffets. In Carinthia, hilltop bonfires are lit on Pfingsten evening.

The Pfingsten weekend is one of the most popular times for Alpine excursions. Mountain huts open for the season, hiking trails are cleared of snow at middle elevations, and cycling paths along the Danube are busy with families. Traditional Austrian holiday meals feature Tafelspitz, Wiener Schnitzel, and fresh spring salads, followed by Marillenknodel (apricot dumplings) or Palatschinken (crepes) for dessert.
